CLASP

making appliance energy efficiency the new global standard

Mexico

CLASP has collaborated with Mexico’s National Commission for Energy Savings (CONAE) and Electric Research Institute (IIE) on the assessment of Mexico’s energy efficiency standards and labeling program. In 2010, CLASP, responding to Mexico’s increased commitment to sustainable energy as seen in the passing of Mexico’s Law for Sustainable Energy and founding of the National Commission for the Efficient Use of Energy (CONUEE), initiated a new program of S&L activities in Mexico in collaboration with CONUEE.

CLASP’s Mexico team, utilizing funding from ClimateWorks Foundation, recognizes a potential to save 30 Mt CO2/year by 2030 in Mexico through improving standards-setting methodologies; strengthening the requirements of current standards through harmonization with international benchmarks; and expanding the existing S&L program to include additional products.

In support of Mexico’s overall energy targets, CLASP provides standards and labeling technical assistance to Mexico in collaboration with CONUEE on the revision of minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for household refrigerators and room air conditioners. CLASP’s Mexico team also provides technical assistance to CONUEE to study the potential impact and feasibility of aligning Mexican MEPS for with those that are currently in place in the U.S.

  • CLASP’s assistance to the National Commission for Energy Efficiency encompasses technical assistance for Minimum Energy Performance Standards development, revision, alignment, and benchmarking.

  • Recent accomplishments of the CLASP Mexico team include significant product specific technical studies and alignment and benchmarking analyses in support of Mexico’s overall energy targets.
