Additional Information

In August 1992 the Environment Protection Administration (EPA) launched an eco-label program called "Greenmark". The EPA still adminsters the program via the Greenmark Program Review Committee however implementation of all aspects of the program is contracted to the Environment and Development Foundation (EDF). The program covers a large number of product categories including paper, water-using devices and several energy-using appliances. All energy using appliances must meet energy efficiency criteria to receive the award.

Labelling Requirements:
The products must meet the following criteria when operated under the conditions of (1) the rated capacity washload, (2) the high water level, (3) the standard washing process, (4) the ratio of soil and stain removal above 0.8, and (5) water extracting efficiency above 45%.
1. The electrical energy consumption per kilogram of washload must not exceed 0.04 kilowatt-hour (Kwh).
2. The water consumption per kilogram of washload must not exceed 30 liters.
3. The airborne acoustical noise during the water extracting shall not exceed 60 dB.
4. The product and its manufacturing process shall not contain or use chloroflurocarbon compounds (CFC's), carbon tetrachloride, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, and other organic halogenides. (subject to to the substances in the control list of the Montreal Protocol.)
5. The name and address of the Green mark user must be clearly printed on the product or its packaging. The name and address of the manufacturer must be marked on the product or packaging as well if the user is not the manufacturer.
6. The product or its packaging material shall bear a label reading "Water-Saving and Low Energy Consumption."
