All electric, mains-operated household refrigerators and freezers and their combinations can be Nordic Ecolabelled. Appliances that may use other energy sources, such as batteries, however cannot be Nordic Ecolabelled.

Test Procedure

EN 153

Associated Test Procedure

The applicant shall provide a copy of the technical documentation referred to under article 2 paragraph 1 of Commission Directive 94/2/EC as amended by Commission Directive 2003/66/EC. This documentation shall include the reports of at least three measurements of energy consumption made according to EN 153 which itself shall be performed in accordance with the test guidelines as detailed in CECED's Operational Code. Sampling must be carried out in a competent way. The test institute/analysis laboratory must be impartial and competent. Raw data must be available for inspection by the ecolabelling organisation throughout the validity period of the license. The analysis laboratory shall fulfill the general requirements in accordance with the standard EN 45001, or be an official GLP- approved analysis laboratory. The applicant shall bear the costs of documentation and analysis. The measurement of the noise level and the information relating to noise shall be provided in accordance with Council Directive 86/594/EEC, using EN 28960 standard.

Additional Information

The requirements for Nordic Ecolabeling of refrigerators and freezers are almost identical to the Commission Decision of 6 April 2004 establishing revised ecological criteria for the award of the Community ecolabel to refrigerators. The Nordic Ecolabel criteria differ in requirement levels regarding flame retardants, life time extension and requirements to analysis laboratories and test institutions. There may also exist some differences in wordings.

Nordic Ecolabelling adopted version 5 of the criteria for Refrigerators and freezers on 29 May 2008. The Secretariat Manager's meeting and the Nordic Ecolabelling Board decided to prolong the validity of the criteria on three instances to date. The latest version (2011) is called 5.3 and it is valid until 31 October 2013.

Revised criteria shall be published at least one year prior to the expiry of the present criteria. The licensee is then offered the opportunity to renew their license.
