Oklahoma Appliance Rebate Program Slated To Begin On Earth Day
February 2010

February 4, 2010 -- The Oklahoma Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program is scheduled to begin on April 22, 2010, in conjunction with Earth Day and surrounding states' programs. The program is a nationwide endeavor from the U.S. Department of Energy and is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

"The appliance rebate program is designed for Oklahoma residents to buy energy-efficient appliances from Oklahoma retailers to replace existing appliances in Oklahoma single residences," said Vaughn Clark, Director, Community Development for the Oklahoma Department of Commerce.

He said the estimated annual savings in Oklahoma from the Energy Star appliance program is:  7,665,683 kWh of energy; 34,230,000 gallons of water and 9,985,150 lbs. of CO2.

Only appliances bought on or after April 22, 2010 will be eligible for the rebate. Approximately 23,000 rebates for ENERGY STAR appliances will be awarded through this plan.  To qualify, appliances must have the ENERGY STAR designation and old appliances must be removed from the property and properly disposed of. Oklahoma residential consumers will be eligible for rebates in Oklahoma, and there is a maximum of one rebate per appliance and two rebates per household. The qualifying ENERGY STAR appliances and rebates levels are:

Clothes Washers                         $200
Refrigerators                               $200
Room Air Conditioners                $50
Water Heaters                            $100
Central Air Conditioners             $100
Gas Furnaces                             $100
Ground Source Heat Pumps       $250
Air Source Heat Pumps              $250

Commerce has initiated communications with area retailers in anticipation of the program. Clark said the state is also in the process of soliciting and contracting a third-party administrator to manage the rebate program. While several details of the program will be determined by the administrator, some details are available now at www.okcommerce.gov/recovery.
