CLASP worked in Ghana from 2000-2002 assisting the Ghana Standards Board (GSB) and the Ministry of Mines and Energy in the development and implementation of national S&L in Ghana.
Specific tasks accomplished by CLASP, in collaboration with Ghana’s Electrical Appliance Labelling and Standards Programme (GEALSP), in Ghana included conducting market assessment; identifying room air conditioners as the first MEPS product; determining MEPS levels; designing a new energy label for room air conditioners; developing new MEPS and labels for the refrigerator, lighting, and motor standards; gathering consumer feedback on labels; developing plans to conduct a formal study; and providing capacity building and training to Ghana Standards Board officials and consultants responsible for managing, directing and informing the national S&L program. Additionally, CLASP completed the report Transforming the West African Market for Energy Efficiency: Ghana Leads the Way with Mandatory Standards and Labels (April 2002).
Funding for CLASP’s work in Ghana came from the United Nations Foundation (UNF) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
